Job Purpose

The main purpose of this job is to execute plant preventative maintenance, repairs, and refurbishments. The artisan will diagnose faults, perform advanced electrical and mechanical work, and ensure the availability and reliability of all plant equipment.

Minimum Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or N3 technical certificate.
  • A formal Trade Test Certificate as an Electrician and/or Millwright (dual-trade is implied).

Essential Experience:

  • 5 to 10 years’ post-apprenticeship experience as an Electrician or Millwright in an industrial/plant environment.

Inherent Requirements:

  • Must have own reliable transport.
  • Must be medically fit for a heavy industrial setting.

Technical Skills & Competencies

Advanced Technical Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of PLCs, instrumentation, and variable speed drives (VSDs).
  • Advanced knowledge of machines, tools, and their design/use.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Ability to build electrical panels from scratch.
  • Proficiency in using all measuring equipment.
  • Ability to fabricate, weld (gas/electric), braze, solder, and grind.

Core Work Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and repair complex faults on plant equipment using structured methods (e.g., 5-why analysis).
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and routine tasks as per schedule.
  • Plan work, conduct risk assessments, and ensure proper access control.
  • Ensure compliance with all OH&S, environmental, and ISO 9001 policies.
  • Manage spares (complete requisitions, maintain stock levels).
  • Clean up work areas and apply standard safety practices.
  • Communicate effectively with production foremen and supervisors.

Interpersonal & Soft Skills:

  • Proficient in English (read, write, speak).
  • Strong intrapersonal skills (managing self, ownership, performance-driven).
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities, be client-responsive, and function as both an individual and a team player.
