Job Purpose
To support customer service at the point of sale by accurately recording transactions on the Dis-Chem operating system. The Cashier ensures a seamless checkout experience, upholds strict financial controls to eliminate fraud risk, and adheres to all company policies and procedures with zero tolerance for inaccuracies.
Key Responsibilities
Transaction Processing & Accuracy
- Transact all purchases – accurately process payments via cash, cards, vouchers, coupons, and other accepted methods.
- Process all loyalty and accelerator partner cards (Discovery, Medihelp, Multiply, etc.).
- Ensure all outgoing stock, items, and scripts are scanned and paid for.
- Handle exchanges and authorised returns according to procedure.
- Ensure all line voids and price changes are properly approved and signed off.
Cash Management & Security
- Be responsible for cash flow in the till.
- Place cash in the drop safe strictly according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Handle daily takings confidentially and only discuss with management.
- Maintain the security of your unique till code and password.
- Be alert, recognise, and report any suspicious behaviour to management immediately.
Customer Service & Compliance
- Adhere to Dis-Chem’s customer service policies, 5-star communication principles, and customer turnover hourly rate.
- Establish professional relationships with customers and address merchandise queries.
- Report customer complaints and compliments to the Frontline Supervisor or store management.
- Be aware of current sales and promotions.
- Adhere to all security policies and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
Essential:
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
- A minimum of 6 months’ experience in cashier/till operations.
- Computer literate – MS Office skills.
- Sound numerical skills and a strong command of the English language.
- Basic customer service orientation.
- Willing and able to work retail hours.
Special Conditions:
- Must have reliable transport and/or reside in close proximity to the Chatsworth store.
- Must be a South African citizen with clear credit and criminal records.
Competencies & Skills
Essential:
- In-depth knowledge of operating cash registers and maintaining cash drawers.
- Knowledge of processing sales, refunds, and payments.
- Accuracy, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills.
- Presentable, with high emotional intelligence and social awareness.
- Accountable, trustworthy, honest, and possesses excellent time management.
- Ability to analyse basic reports.
Advantageous:
- Proficiency in a third additional language.
