Position Overview
Rhodes University is seeking two qualified Electricians to join its maintenance team. The successful candidates will be responsible for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and compliance of electrical systems across campus, including MV/LV installations, renewable energy systems, and commercial appliances.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repairs:
- Perform MV (11kV) and LV (220V/380V) electrical system maintenance in compliance with SANS 10142-1 & 10142-2.
- Diagnose and repair faults in commercial kitchen equipment, laundry systems, and standby generators.
- Maintain lighting protection systems, UPS systems, and fire detection systems.
- Installation & Compliance:
- Install and upgrade electrical networks, including renewable energy systems (solar preferred).
- Ensure adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) and Department of Labour regulations.
- Supervision & Coordination:
- Oversee junior staff and contractors.
- Hold an RU Supervision Certificate (or equivalent experience).
Requirements
Qualifications & Certifications
- Qualified Installation Electrician (NQF Level 4 minimum).
- HV Regulations Certificate (for MV switching).
- Valid driver’s license (light delivery vehicle).
- Registered with the Department of Labour (OHS Act compliance).
Experience
- 3+ years post-apprenticeship experience in:
- MV/LV installations and switching.
- Power reticulation and sports lighting.
- Standby generators and inverters.
- 1+ year in staff supervision (or RU Supervision Certificate).
Preferred Skills
- Experience with electric boilers, heat pumps, and solar systems.
- Knowledge of addressable fire detection systems.
