Job Purpose

The Trainee Train Assistant supports the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of freight, passenger, and heavy-haul trains. The role ensures that locomotives and wagons are handled correctly so that cargo is transported safely, efficiently, and delivered on time in accordance with operational standards and customer requirements.


Key Responsibilities

1. Train Preparation & Sign-On Duties

  • Report for duty and receive shift assignments
  • Identify and prepare the correct locomotive for operation
  • Inspect, clean, and equip locomotives according to standards
  • Assist with locomotive start-up procedures and brake tests
  • Ensure all required equipment is available and functional

2. Communication Equipment Handling

  • Collect and test radios, telecommunication devices, and related equipment
  • Ensure communication systems are functional before departure

3. Pre-Trip Inspection & Train Readiness

  • Assist in coupling and decoupling of locomotives and wagons
  • Complete train documentation (vehicle lists, forms, indicators)
  • Conduct safety and brake checks with the Train Driver
  • Ensure compliance with train working rules and safety regulations

4. Shunting Operations

  • Perform shunting activities in yards and sidings as per work orders
  • Place, remove, and arrange wagons safely and accurately
  • Update train and vehicle movement records

5. Enroute Train Assistance

  • Assist Train Driver in monitoring signals and track conditions
  • Observe train movement and ensure safe operation
  • Respond to emergencies and assist in incident management
  • Reset locomotive systems when required

6. Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to Transnet safety policies and operational procedures
  • Maintain awareness of health and safety regulations (SANS 3000, etc.)
  • Report deviations, incidents, and risks promptly

7. Administrative Duties

  • Complete train journals and shift reports accurately
  • Submit documentation to the Section Manager after each shift

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and/or Physical Science
  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Minimum height: 1.6m
  • Ability to undergo medical, fitness, and psychomotor assessments
  • Physically fit to handle heavy equipment and shift work
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and irregular hours

Training Requirements

  • Must complete theoretical and practical Train Assistant training
  • Must obtain Train Assistant certification
  • Must demonstrate competency in locomotive operations and safety procedures
