Job Purpose
To achieve defined performance targets in the mining section through building operator capabilities and by planning, organising, and controlling day-to-day mining activities. The role involves crew leadership, safety management, and acting as a Relieving Shift Boss.
Key Accountabilities
Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Leadership
- Manage all SHE issues in the section, ensuring compliance with policies and standards.
- Conduct statutory inspections (gas, ventilation), risk assessments, and task observations.
- Oversee correct use of PPE, adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and section housekeeping.
- Conduct monthly rescue drills and ensure safe transport of the team.
Production & Crew Management
- Manage the crew to meet production targets and oversee complex mining activities (including pillar extraction where applicable).
- Command daily performance meetings, manage crew attendance, and submit accurate reports.
- Identify training needs, coach operators, and ensure crew competence.
- Ensure availability of adequate materials and resources in the section.
Administration & Acting Responsibilities
- Act as a Relieving Shift Boss when required, performing SAP inputs for time, attendance, and orders.
- Represent the Shift Boss in Operational Excellence (OE) meetings and transfer knowledge.
- Complete all statutory reports and maintain accurate operator records (e.g., licenses).
Minimum Requirements
Formal Education:
- Grade 12 with Mathematics.
- Valid Blasting Certificate.
- Valid Gas Testing Certificate.
- Competent A Certificate.
Working Experience:
- 4+ years of relevant mining experience in a production/supervisory capacity.
Required Personal & Professional Skills
Technical Competencies (TC):
- Verbal Communication, Troubleshooting Technical Issues, SHE Policies & Standards.
- Risk Management, Mining Equipment Efficiency.
Behavioural Competencies (BC):
- Collaborates, Courage, Decision Quality, Drives Results, Ensures Accountability.
